A self-help organization dedicated to aiding those with hearing impairments to overcome their difficulties and integrate into society, the Macau Deaf Association was founded in 1994 by Father Axelrod Cyril and individuals suffering from hearing loss.
Under the motto Help Oneself, Help Others” the organization has created initiatives, such as the “Educational Centre for the Hearing Impaired Children”, to help children develop their language, communication and social skills, as well as in acquiring knowledge and recognition capacities. In addition to the educational aspect of the association, the group also provides a “Service Centre for the Deaf” which offers an array of services to adults, encompassing social work, lifelong education, sign language interpretation, and assistance in vocational training and employment of deaf people.
The association has also provided invaluable services to people with hearing disabilities, helping them in procuring appropriate assistant hearing devices and opening up media channels and information by providing simultaneous sign language interpreting on local broadcaster TDM news broadcasts.
