Macau Design Centre

award2016-02Conceived by the Macau Designers Association, the Macau Design Centre was created as a convergence point for the local creative design industry. Occupying a five-story building formerly used as a factory in the Areia Preta neighbourhood, the centre focuses on the improvement and promotion of the Macau design scene through its display and performance space as well as artist studios housing some of the city’s top designers and artists. Through its studio space application programme the centre has granted 25 local design companies with studios spaces, providing a comfortable working environment with all-round services for a lower-than-market price. The centre also develops initiatives to help increase visibility for local designers and their brands, though projects like the ‘My Good Goods Store’, which offers a show-room store and exhibition room displaying the products of the local artists, for sale to the public. Aside from promoting locally, the Macau Design Centre also helps its artists and products through expositions internationally, such as through a recent showcase of local multimedia and design projects at the China-Japan-Korea Industries Expo 2016 in Shandong Weifang, China.

Hotel Okura Macau

award2016-04Hotel Okura Macau is a 5-star luxury hotel located in the integrated resort Galaxy Macau in Cotai, and part of the Japanese hotel chain Okura Hotels & Resorts.

In its efforts to create a more environmentally friendly operation – increasing awareness of recycling, reducing waste and saving energy and water – the hotel is implementing a series of comprehensive measures across the board, from staff training to guest experience. These include: collection of waste paper, ink and toner cartridges, glass and plastic bottles and aluminum cans for recycling; use of soap dispensers to replace plastic soap and shampoo bottles; and reducing the purchase of food with short life spans to avoid food waste. In addition Hotel Okura encourages guests through signage aimed at reducing water wastage and implementing a paper-less customer promotion system through social networking instead of leaflet use to pursue a green experience throughout their stay.

award2016-05The Sofitel Macau At Ponte 16 is a luxury 408 rooms hotel located in a historical quarter of Macau. It is part of Sofitel Luxury Hotels, an up-market hotel brand which forms part of Accor Hotels group. Sofitel Macau had joined the Planet 21 program since 2011. Planet 21 is an internal system to advance the performance of the group’s hotels, an action plan that offers them 65 actions to promote sustainable development, tailored to the hotel context. 1) Water saving: currently all guests rooms’ faucets are installed with 5 Liter/minute water regulators. Sofitel will replace them to 3 Liter/minute regulators before the end of 2016 and 2 liter/minute regulators for all the public water faucets.

2) Waste reduction: F&B kitchen will implement a program called WINNOW, to further monitor and control food waste.

award2016-16The Moon Chun Memorial College (MCM College) is a constituent college at the University of Macau. The College recently received the Macau Chamber of Commerce Award for Euroexcellence in Innovation for its multi-cultural and international educational approach and collaboration with different Macau cultural and educational entities. Led by Professor Kit Thompson, who serves as the College Master, the MCM College in 2016 collaborated with the International Script Road Festival, bringing together members of the local community with internationally famed journalists, musicians, writers filmmakers and translators. In addition the festival provided a workshop with Pulitzer prize-winning author Adam Johnson. Through efforts by Professor Thomson, the college was chosen to represent the University of Macau at The Young Universities Summit and Rankings held in Barcelona in April of 2016, further leveraging the college’s prestige after the University of Macau placed 39th in the Times Higher Education World 100 ranking for 2015. award2016-19A self-help organization dedicated to aiding those with hearing impairments to overcome their difficulties and integrate into society, the Macau Deaf Association was founded in 1994 by Father Axelrod Cyril and individuals suffering from hearing loss.

Under the motto Help Oneself, Help Others” the organization has created initiatives, such as the “Educational Centre for the Hearing Impaired Children”, to help children develop their language, communication and social skills, as well as in acquiring knowledge and recognition capacities. In addition to the educational aspect of the association, the group also provides a “Service Centre for the Deaf” which offers an array of services to adults, encompassing social work, lifelong education, sign language interpretation, and assistance in vocational training and employment of deaf people.

The association has also provided invaluable services to people with hearing disabilities, helping them in procuring appropriate assistant hearing devices and opening up media channels and information by providing simultaneous sign language interpreting on local broadcaster TDM news broadcasts.

In 2011, Mr. Chan and his wife pooled their MOP700,000 in saves and established Healthy Life Pharmacy (HLPM), setting up their first pharmacy in the northern region in the city. The company mainly provides medicines and daily supplies, and is focused primarily on serving local citizens. Having established a store near the local public hospital, HLPM aims to further help its clients through the provision of medicines to patients from the hospital, augmenting its local offerings through its other stores. Generating assets worth millions during its five years of operation, the pharmaceutical group employs nearly 70 workers and has set up four stores throughout the city, with more openings planned for the future to increase its distribution possibilities.
